Artist Statement
To me, Cape Cod, Massachusetts is a magical place. My first trip there was as a baby and I’ve gone there every summer since. It is where I first realized that I wanted to be an artist.
Cape Cod is the inspiration for much of my work. Not only do I see things that I want to paint, but it seems to “recharge” me for the year ahead. I come back to Pennsylvania excited to paint and recreate the things I’ve seen and felt while I was away. Occasionally, other things inspire me as well, usually Holstein cows. I love the strong contrast of the black and white and their sweet, dog-like faces.
I use oil paints, and I prefer bold color to infuse my paintings with the intensity of emotion that I feel.
Artist bio
Janis Galbraith Fitch received her bachelor of fine arts degree, with a concentration in painting and drawing, from the University of Delaware in 1979. She is originally from Teaneck, New Jersey but has spent most of her adult life in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Summers have always been spent in the little town of North Truro in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Fitch paints in oils, using intense color to interpret what she sees. Her subject of choice is the Cape Cod landscape with its beautiful skies and warm sunlight. Her trademark cows are also frequently painted and often show up on the Cape beaches!
Janis has participated in many group and juried shows. One of her first awards was in 1983, when she took first place in the art association's Mixed Media Show. She began having one-woman exhibits in 1986. Janis was also one of the artists featured in the book “Speaking for Themselves; The Artists of Southeastern Pennsylvania”, by Daphne Landis. She was also chosen to create the cover art for the Chester County Art Association’s 1996 Invitational Gala brochure and was the featured artist in the 1991 Historic Yellow Springs Art Show.
