Treasures from the Collection of Philip Jamison Chester County Art Association Huston Gallery September 14th – October 4th 2023
Philip Jamison's art collection began with trades among fellow artists like Harry Dunn and Robert McKinney back in the fifties. Over time, he developed a keen interest in "early American moderns," as he called them. These included Morris Blackburn, Hobson Pitman and his favorite Arthur B. Carles. Perhaps surprisingly for a realist, his taste tended towards the expressionistic and abstract. He haunted galleries and auction house in Philadelphia, New York and the West Chester area. His dealers knew what he liked, and he became adept at "trading up" as various acquisitions increased in value. Some things he would never sell, and they remained filed on his elaborate shelving system. Displays constantly rotated in various combinations in his small home. Everything was photographed, researched and filed alphabetically in 3-ring binders. If he liked it, it was worth adding to the collection, and he could explain exactly why each thing was "good" or even "great." His collector's passion kept his interest right to end. He always loved creating and also admiring art.
